The existing Croatian Rainbow Families’ logo needed polishing and a dose of simplification. It also needed a visual identity that could function in a modern environment and be better equipped for the digital landscape.
We were eager to create an identity that combines the uplifting vibes of the LGBTIQ community with elements of Croatian and Balkan culture. Whether it’s the subtle nod to traditional Croatian ornaments (‘pleter’) or the use of typography that evokes 70s and 80s nostalgia – we wanted to give Rainbow Families a local character.
One of the biggest challenges was creating a visual identity that is colorful and joyful, but at the same time avoids the pitfall of looking childish or unserious, a problem some Rainbow Families run into.
Rainbow Families in Croatian go by the name Dugine obitelji. So, we turned the rainbow into a D for the domestic version, and for the English version we rotated it into a C. It’s a bilingual logo, adapted for domestic purposes as well as for international interactions.
Case in (needle)point: mixing Balkan cultural tradition with rainbow branding.
